After a summer filled with road trips, camping and new experiences it's time to get back to school! With the start of a new school year I wanted to set myself some goals for self-improvement. Writing them down in my blog will hopefully help me to stick to my good intentions this year!
Goal #1 - Growth Mindset
This summer I read Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck. I recognize that I have a growth mindset in some parts of my life but not others. There are things that I often use the excuse that "I'm no good at that." I see the benefit of teaching students the growth mindset of thinking. I also read Mindsets in the Classroom by Mary Cay Ricci which takes Dwecks work and applies it to classroom use. Ricci sites many resources to help teach kids about how their brains form connections and language to use with students to promote Growth Mindset.
My goal is to look at things that I struggle with through a growth mindset lens and promote this within my classroom and school this year.
Goal #2 - Reflection
My second goal is to spend more time reflecting on my individual lessons and teaching. Many times I find myself running around trying to get everything done and not taking the time to sit and reflect on my teaching practice or how things went on a regular basis. I've bought myself a couple of nice notebooks and am scheduling myself 5 minutes at the end of each day to reflect on what went well and what I would change. Hopefully having the notebooks and scheduled time will help me to take the time to reflect.
Goal #3 - Share More
I was introduced to twitter a couple of years ago at a session done by Blue Jay Bridge @MrBridge204. It was career changing for me. I have learned more in the last two years from passionate physical educators on twitter that are producing great resources like blogs, podcast and websites. They are putting out online PD that makes it possible to have on-going professional development throughout the year.
My goal is to contribute more this year. I have been somewhat of a lurker, watching what was going on. I started my blog last June and have the goal of adding to it once a week. I am also going to share more of what's happening in my classroom on a daily basis on twitter. Sharing is caring!
